MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST
Abstraction in Bani Pershad's work process could be identified as the reality of within, reality in this case can be subjective to individuals. Bani has been wandering among the truth, metaphors, pure colourism and general elements of abstraction for many years now. Her internal experience is innate in her academics and practical knowledge of play and splashing with colours which she has been constantly experimenting with.
"When I am painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc, because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well."
The world of Abstraction, for the artist is through the process of an internal observation of “self” into a
meditative mode of painting with 'Zen' (Dhyana), though seemingly subjective this hypothesis is basically
a practical theory which actually is deeply political and social in order to revalidate the significant
phenomenon of abstraction as revolting dead against to the established conventions of abstract art
imported without personification to India. With the ongoing thought process of self evaluation and
experimentation, her lines and strokes have started getting an identity of its own. Infact, her language of
expression loaded with meditative energy started growing distance with the so called Realism.
Bani's approach seems to subvert the very foundations of how abstract art was initially perceived in India—often as a Western phenomenon with little relation to the country’s own artistic traditions. This move toward abstraction in her work is not just about breaking free from realism, but also about asserting an individuality that rejects the imposition of foreign norms.
